Sooner or later, you have to visit Southeast Asia if you enjoy looking the world. There are plainly too many unique landmarks and consuming cultural aspect to not do so. When you go, you may find getting about a bit difficult, so focus on Thailand as your hub.

Asia is a consuming area that has to be seen to be believed. From the spires of Angkor Wat to the lightening shows off the coast of Sihanoukville in Cambodia, there is something for everyone. To top the area off as a top destination, a currency problem in the late 1990s has resulted in Southeast Asia being a very cheap trip. Yes, even with the dollar being beaten up.

There is only one hang up when it comes to traveling in this area. plainly put, it is difficult to get from here to there. The quality, size and frequency of the transportation systems in the countries varies fairly dramatically. Think the variation in the middle of two countries sharing a long border – Thailand and Cambodia.

Thailand has its act together. There is abundance of bus, tram and train aid in the bustling city of Bangkok. You can also take overnight trains from the city to most destinations in the country. If you have a few bucks to spare, you can commonly fly from the city to larger destination in the country, such as Chang Mai, for $40 to $80. When you are ready to head to someone else country in the region, international flights out of Bangkok are also plentiful and cheap.

Cambodia is in sharp variation to Thailand. For the most part, the use of the term “roads” is debatable. Things are rough. Much of the northern area of the country is very difficult to access. In fact, one of the more favorite ways to get colse to the country when possible is by ferry. It is very recommended that you use this mode of transportation when heading to Angkor Wat or your kidneys and back will be an absolute mess. Flying colse to Cambodia domestically is nearly impossible and international flights are infrequent and unmistakably expensive.

Lest you think I am unfairly criticizing Cambodia, it should be noted there is a clear infer for the infrastructure problems in the country. The Khmer Rouge, of course. This group led by Pol Pot tried to revert the country to an agricultural society. Besides killing nearly a third of the population, the infrastructure took a beating.

This variation may seem extreme, but it can be found in other countries. Laos is wonderful, but very rural. Indonesia is cheaper than even Cambodia and Thailand, but tour within the country can be physically tough. The variation go on and on.

Should you tour to Southeast Asia, you are going to need a place to make your base. Thailand is an excellent selection based on my trips to the region. It is very inexpensive, yet the infrastructure is excellent. It plainly makes a great place to activate any exploration of the region.

Northern Thailand is a sizable part of the country which borders Myanmar and Laos, characterized by its rugged terrain and mix of peoples such as mainland Thais, Burmese, Shan and hilltribe groups (Karen,Hmong,Lahu,Lisu and Akha). These characteristics give Northern Thailand a culture and feel about it that is very separate to the rest of Thailand.

The second biggest city in Thailand and the capital of the North, Chiang Mai attracts thousands of tourists every year. A city of old and new, where east meets west, it guarantees something for everybody. Some say Chiang Mai has all things Bangkok has to offer except on a much smaller and quieter scale. Most population allow a few days in Chiang Mai but one could categorically spend a week soaking up the sights and sounds and falling for the charm of this city.

For those seeing to observe more of Northern Thailand past the environs of Chiang Mai, there are two beloved options. One is to head directly north to Chiang Rai or west to Mae Hong Son. Chiang Rai can be comfortably explored in 3 days face destinations such as Fang, Thaton and Mae Salong. Most population set aside 3 days or less to observe Chiang Rai, although some make Chiang Rai a day trip- this is not recommended as most of the day is spent traveling as it is a good 4 hours drive from Chiang Mai.

With 3 days/2 nights a recommended route which covers both traveler and non traveler areas is; Chiang Mai – Chiang Dao – Doi Angkhang – Fang -Thaton – Mae Salong -Mae Sai- Golden Triangle – Chiang Rai – Chiang Mai. This route covers some beautiful natural scenery such as paddy fields, farmland growing a collection of crops, mountain backdrops and hilltribes. This route gets off the main traveler trail, the direct road from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai that many industrial tour operators take to visit traveler hot spots such as the Golden Triangle and Mae Sai border.

For those with 4 days or more on their hands Mae Hong Son province which lies west of Chiang Mai is very recommended. Mae Hong Son has a more remote feel to it as more time is needed to navigate straight through this sizable province it remains less chartered by tourists. Home to a mix of peoples such as the Burmese, Shan, hilltribes and Thais, another distinctive feature of Mae Hong Son is the Shan and Burmese affect not found everywhere else in Thailand. This can be seen straight through the architecture, where ornate Shan style temples are scattered throughout this province. This area is also notable for its mists, named the land of 3 mists due to the dewy mist in the winter, rainy mist in the wet season and mist from forest fires in the summer.

Mae Hong Son Province is best discovered by doing the Mae Hon Son Loop a notable 600km circuit which starts from Chiang Mai taking you straight through the towns of Pai, Mae Hong Son and Mae Sariang before ending back up at Chiang Mai. The circuit can be done in a clockwise direction stopping off at Mae Sariang first or anti-clockwise via Pai.

For the greatest Northern Thailand experience with 10 days or more on your hands you could cover both Mae Hong Son and Chiang Rai. Beginning off with the Mae Hong Son Loop then crossing over from Pai to Chiang Dao and up North to the Chiang Rai region.
